Adam Gilchrist Calls IPL’s Global Dominance In T20 Franchise Cricket Dangerous Says Legend

Sportson: Former Australia legend Adam Gilchrist expressed concern about the Indian Premier League's (IPL) growing global footprint on Wednesday, saying the cash-rich league's efforts to monopolize T20 franchise cricket are becoming "a little bit dangerous."

Gilchrist's comments follow reports in Australian media that batter David Warner will skip Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) this season to play in a new league funded by IPL money.

The owners of IPL teams have also purchased all six franchises in South Africa's new domestic T20 league, and three IPL franchise owners - Kolkata, Rajasthan, and Punjab - own teams in the Caribbean Premier League.

"I believe it would be almost commercial suicide for (Cricket Australia) to allow a player like him (Warner) to compete against their own competition," Gilchrist told Australia's SEN Radio.

"They won't be able to force David Warner to play in the BBL... But allowing him to go off - or another player, let's not single out Warner because other players will be on the radar - is all part of the global dominance that these IPL franchises are beginning to establish.

"... The grip that it has on that ownership and the ownership of the players and their talents and where they can and cannot play is becoming a little dangerous."

Gilchrist stated that veteran Warner's dedication to Australian cricket cannot be questioned, but that younger players can follow in his footsteps.

"You can't question him if he rides off into the sunset and says, 'Sorry Australian cricket, I'm going to become a gun for hire for my Indian franchise team in various tournaments,'" Gilchrist said.

"That is his prerogative, and he has done everything necessary to obtain the profile and market value." It'll be really difficult when the new younger player comes in and starts making those noises."

Indian Premier League (IPL)

The Indian Premier League (IPL), also known as the TATA IPL due to sponsorship, is a professional men's Twenty20 cricket league played by ten teams from seven Indian cities and three Indian states.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) established the league in 2007. It is typically held between the months of March and May each year and has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme.

The IPL is the world's most-attended cricket league, ranking sixth in average attendance among all sports leagues in 2014.

In 2010, the IPL became the world's first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube.

According to Duff & Phelps, the IPL's brand value in 2019 was Rs 47,500 crore (US$5.9 billion).

According to the BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed 1,150 crores (US$140 million) to India's GDP. The 2020 IPL season set a massive viewership record with 31.57 million average impressions and a 23% increase in overall consumption over the 2019 season.

The IPL tournament has lasted fifteen seasons. Gujarat Titans are the current IPL champions, having won the 2022 season.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises funded the establishment of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007.

Neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor the International Cricket Council (ICC) recognized the ICL, and the BCCI was dissatisfied with its committee members joining the ICL executive board.

To discourage players from joining the ICL, the BCCI increased prize money in their own domestic tournaments and imposed lifetime bans on players who joined the ICL, which the board considered a rebel league.

Format of the tournament

With ten teams, the round-robin format was abandoned, and two virtual groups of five were introduced in the league phase, similar to the 2011 season. Following the league stage, the top four teams will advance to the playoffs.

The first Qualifying match will pit the top two teams from the league phase against each other, with the winner going straight to the IPL final and the loser getting another chance to qualify for the IPL final by playing the second Qualifying match.

Meanwhile, the third and fourth place teams from the league phase face off in an eliminator match, with the winner facing the loser from the first Qualifying match. The winner of the second Qualifying match advances to the final, where they will face the winner of the first Qualifying match in the IPL Final match, with the winner being crowned Indian Premier League champions.
