Shafique's marathon run, Pakistan's record pursuit, and Jayasuriya's fantasy start

Highlights from the visitors' victory in Galle, when they set a new record for successful chases in Tests.


 

Pakistan successfully pursued 342 targets in Galle, their second most in Test cricket. It is also the team's second-highest target versus Sri Lanka. The record for both is 377, which Pakistan set in Pallekele in 2015.


1 Pakistan's 342 is the greatest successful Test chase by any side in Galle. Sri Lanka's previous record was 268 against New Zealand in 2019, while England's previous high for a visiting team was 164 in 2021.


Pakistan's Galle chase is also the fourth-most successful fourth-innings chase in Sri Lankan Tests.


Abdullah Shafique batted for 524 minutes for his unbroken 160, the longest a batsman has batted during a successful Test chase. Aravinda de Silva held the previous record with 460 minutes against Zimbabwe in 1998.


Shafique's 524-minute outing is also the third-longest by any hitter in the fourth innings of a Test in which minutes batted data is available.


Shafique faced 408 balls throughout the run chase. He is just the seventh hitter in Test history to face 400 or more balls in the fourth inning of a game when balls faced statistics is available.


Shafique faced 408 balls in a successful chase, behind only Herbert Sutcliffe, who faced 462 deliveries for his 135 against Australia in 1928.


3 Shafique's undefeated 160 is also the third-highest individual score in an Asian fourth-innings chase.

Kyle Mayers scored 210 points against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2021, while Younis Khan hit 171 points against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2015.


Shafique's total of 160* in Galle is currently Pakistan's third-highest individual score in the fourth innings of a Test. Babar Azam struck 196 against Australia earlier this year in Karachi, with Younis finishing in second with 171*.

At the 1984 Lord's Test, Gordon Greenidge hit an unbroken 214 against England, whereas Arthur Morris scored 182 against England in Leeds in 1948.


Shafique has 720 Test runs in his six-match career. Only Sunil Gavaskar (912), Don Bradman (862) and George Headley scored more runs in their first six matches than him (730).


Prabath Jayasuriya has 21 wickets in two Tests. Only Narendra Hirwani (24) and Alec Bedser (22) got more wickets in their two matches than Jayasuriya, although Bob Massie also had 21.


Jayasuriya also became just the third bowler after Tom Richardson and Clarrie Grimmett to get five-fors in his first three Test innings.
